HMC filters are multi-coated with three layers to each side, versus an uncoated filter which transmits about 90-percent of light, or single-coated filters transmitting about 95-percent, HMC filters average 99-percent light transmission.

What filters are necessary for a beginner to SLR's?

I just recently bought a Nikon D40 and should be arriving in the mail this week. However, I also want to purchase accessories for it. Please note that I am completely new to the world of SLR's. Through a lot of research, I came to the conclusion that there are basically two filters anyone would ever need. Correct me if I'm wrong:
1. UV Filter: The main purpose of these is to protect the lenses from dust, water, and damages. Apparently, they do a poor job in filtering UV and occasionally can reduce image quality/cause flares.
2. Polarizing Filter: These are used for scenic shots, in which details of clouds are much more important. What these filters do is create a rich colored sky.

Tell me what you think, use, or recommend to a new user of SLR's. I had in mind of only buying a Tiffen 52mm UV Protection Filter, but many sources say that it is not multi-coated and causes flares. To buy or not to buy, that's the question. And if I do buy, which one and why. Thanks!

You've done your homework well.
Get a UV and if you feel an urge - a polarizer.

One more application for a polarizer you did not mention (sometimes more important than making the sky richer) is to cut the reflections. For example, you're photographing a well polished car, or a lake and you ee a lot of reflections on a surface. A polarizer will either remove or greatly reduce these for you. Also if you must photograph from behind some glass (windows, zoo cages, etc) and there are a lot of things reflect in that window - that will do it too.

Hoya makes a number of filters, some of them are multi-coated, some not. So just make sure you get the multi-coated one (its more expensive). Hoya and Tiffen are usually the good brands to look for in filters, so you're good to go.
